Glucose-induced alterations of cytosolic free calcium in cultured rat tail artery vascular smooth muscle cells

1995

We have previously suggested that hyperglycemia per se may contribute to diabetic hypertensive and vascular disease by altering cellular ion content. To more directly investigate the potential role of glucose in this process, we measured cytosolic free calcium in primary cultures of vascular smooth muscle cells isolated from Sprague-Dawley rat tail artery before and after incubation with 5 (basal), 10, 15, and 20 mM glucose. Glucose significantly elevated cytosolic free calcium in a dose- and time-dependent manner, from 110.0 +/- 5.4 to 124.5 +/- 9.0, 192.7 +/- 20.4, and 228.4 +/- 21.9 nM at 5, 10, 15, and 20 mM glucose concentrations, respectively. This glucose-induced cytosolic free calci…

Increased expression of interleukin-22 in patients with giant cell arteritis

2017

Objectives GCA is characterized by arterial remodelling driven by inflammation. IL-22 is an attractive cytokine which acts at the crosstalk between immune and stromal cells. We hypothesized that IL-22 might be induced in GCA and might be involved in disease pathogenesis. Methods Patients subjected to temporal artery biopsies (TABs) naive from therapy were enrolled: 27 biopsy-proven GCA, 8 biopsy-negative GCA, 21 biopsy-negative non-GCA patients. Expression of IL-22 was determined in TABs by immunohystochemistry, in plasma by ELISA, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells by real-time PCR and flow cytometry. Effects of IL-22 on viability and gene expression of primary cultures obtained from TA…

Treatment with Calcium Ionophore Improves The Results in Patients with Previous Unsuccessful Attempts at The Fertilization: A Cohort Study

2021

Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate artificial oocyte activation (AOA) with calcium ionophore (CaI) in a subsequent attempt at fertilisation in patients after extremely low or failed fertilisation. We assessed improvements in fertilisation, implantation and pregnancy rates as well as cancellation rates in these patients. Finally, was evaluated the result testing in addition to delivery rate and obstetric outcomes in children born after AOA. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective observational study conducted in an IVF laboratory of an IVI clinic (IVIRMA Valencia, Spain). One group (509 mature oocytes from 66 patients) received a first intracytoplasmic sperm injec…

Modelling biological and chemically induced precipitation of calcium phosphate in enhanced biological phosphorus removal systems

2011

The biologically induced precipitation processes can be important in wastewater treatment, in particular treating raw wastewater with high calcium concentration combined with Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal. Currently, there is little information and experience in modelling jointly biological and chemical processes. This paper presents a calcium phosphate precipitation model and its inclusion in the Activated Sludge Model No 2d (ASM2d). The proposed precipitation model considers that aqueous phase reactions quickly achieve the chemical equilibrium and that aqueous-solid change is kinetically governed. The model was calibrated using data from four experiments in a Sequencing Batch Rea…
